Στο κλασσικό αυτό έργο και ίσως το πιο επιδραστικό του, ο Σίγκμουντ Φρόυντ θεωρούσε πως είχε κάνει την πιο σημαντική του συμβολή και ανακάλυψη, συμπυκνωμένη στην εξής διαπίστωση: η ερμηνεία των ονείρων είναι ο βασιλικός δρόμος προς τη γνώση των ασυνείδητων διεργασιών του νου.

Η μέθοδος και οι συσχετισμοί που χρησιμοποιεί προσιδιάζουν πρακτικές ανάλογες με αυτές του αρχαίου συγγραφέα Αρτεμίδωρου,

με σκοπό όμως αυτή τη φορά όχι να προβλεφθούν τα μελλούμενα αλλά να οδηγηθούμε στην είσοδο της αχαρτογράφητης εκείνης περιοχής του ανθρώπινου ψυχισμού που ο ίδιος ονόμαζε ασυνείδητο.
